What is a dental bridge?

resin fillings

A dental bridge is a ceramic tooth that has been fixed in place between two porcelain crowns to fill the gap left by the missing tooth. These crowns are attached to the teeth on either side of the false tooth in a procedure called a fixed bridge. This procedure can be used to replace one or more missing teeth.

The basic process required to install a dental bridge generally takes two sessions scheduled a week or two apart, and typically goes as follows:

  • The teeth on each immediate side of the gap are prepared and shaped to receive crowns. The dentist will make an impression that is used to create the bridge.
  • A temporary (or transitional) bridge may be formed and fitted in the area.
  • We remove the temporary bridge during the next visit and set, adjust and cement the permanent fixed bridge into place.

It’s important to remember to clean your bridge every day to avoid problems such as bad breath and gum disease.

Discover the benefits of a dental bridge

benefits

There are many advantages to opting for a dental bridge over other methods of filling a space left by a missing tooth.

  • Correctly installed fixed bridges are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
  • Your bridge will last many years, making the expense of having it made and installed worth your while.
  • They will help to restore your smile as well as your capacity to aptly chew and speak.
  • They will help you avoid suffering from TMJ dysfunction as the bridge will even out the forces in your bite that will otherwise have been altered by the missing tooth / teeth.
  • Your bridge will also help to prevent your existing teeth from drifting out position in order to naturally fill the space left behind by the missing tooth.

Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth as you might do with removable partial dentures. If you’d like to find out more about dental bridges, feel free to give My Smile Dental a call on (03) 9390 9333 or book an appointment online.
