What is a Crown?

crowns-img1

Dental crowns are quite versatile in their functionality. Their key purpose is to protect the remaining structure of a tooth that has severely broken down, fractured or has a large existing restoration that requires replacement. But in addition to that, they can also be used to change the appearance, shape and even position of the tooth.

Also known as caps, dental crowns are placed and fitted over the remaining part of the tooth to give a natural, realistic looking smile. There are numerous different types of crowns, including the full porcelain crown, the porcelain fused to metal crown, and all metallic (gold) crown. The team at My Smile Dental in Sydenham are here to assist you with all your dental crown needs.

The crown installation procedure

Installing a dental crown is done over two sessions, each about a week or two apart from each other. The standard crown installation procedure goes as follows.

  • The dentist first removes any signs of decay, and then shapes the tooth so it is suitable to fit a crown. An impression of the treated section of the mouth is taken and used to create a crown that fits perfectly over your tooth.
  • We form and fit a temporary crown to the reshaped tooth. This temporary crown is made out of a dental material that is shaped to suit your tooth & and is necessary to protect your remaining tooth structure while we wait for the permanent crown to be made.
  • Two weeks later, the insert appointment is scheduled. During this appointment, which we remove the temporary crown and set the permanent one into place using a specially formulated permanent dental cement.

Our dentists use a local anaesthetic for the procedure and the crown should last longterm – average is about ten years, but this can be affected by the overall health of your mouth
